When customers ask about solar glass, transmittance almost always comes up.
It makes sense. The higher the number, the more sunlight passes through the glass.
But after working with solar collectors for a while, you start to notice something.
People don't really talk about transmittance because of the number itself.
They care about what happens after years of being outside.
Sunlight only gets one chance
For a solar collector, sunlight reaches the glass first.
Whatever passes through can be absorbed and turned into heat.
Whatever gets reflected away is simply gone.
The collector doesn't get another opportunity to use it.
That's why manufacturers spend so much time trying to improve the front glass, even if the improvement looks small on paper.
The difference isn't obvious on the first day
If two collectors are installed side by side, nobody is going to stand there and say, "This one looks hotter."
It doesn't work like that.
The difference is gradual.
Day after day, the collector with better light transmission is able to make a little better use of the available sunlight.
One day doesn't tell much.
A few years usually tell a different story.
Chasing the highest number isn't always the answer
It's easy to focus on one specification.
Reality is usually less straightforward.
Glass also has to deal with rain, UV exposure, dust, temperature changes and cleaning over many years.
A collector isn't tested only on the day it leaves the factory.
Most people care much more about how it performs after five or ten years.
Clean glass still matters
This is something that's easy to forget.
Even high-transmittance glass can't do much if the surface is covered with dirt for months.
We've seen systems where the glass quality wasn't the problem at all.
The collector simply wasn't being cleaned often enough.
Sometimes maintenance has a bigger effect than people expect.
Numbers are useful, but experience says more
Technical data sheets are important.
They help people compare products.
But after enough projects, many buyers start paying attention to something else.
Does the glass stay clear after years outside?
Does it perform consistently from one production batch to another?
Those questions don't usually appear in bold on a brochure.
They come from experience.
And in the solar collector industry, experience often carries just as much weight as the numbers themselves.
