How to test the tempered solar glass's mechanical strength?

As a professional solar glass manufacturer, we attach great importance to the tempered glass's mechanical strength, whether during the glass manufacturing process or after providing glass samples to customers. There are two experiments we talked about often: The hail test and the falling ball impact test.

What is the hail test?

Hail testing simulates hail impacting the glass surface of a photovoltaic module during hailstorms. Therefore, the entire photovoltaic module, not just a single pane of tempered glass, is tested.

According to international standards IEC 61215 and IEC 61646, hail testing requires the following four elements:

1. Test object: PV module panel

2. Ice ball diameter: 25 mm ice balls are typically used. This simulates hail of medium to high intensity. Other sizes are available (such as 35 mm and 45 mm for more stringent testing), but for general certification, 25 mm is the standard.

3. Impact velocity: This is the most critical parameter. The standard requires a velocity of 23 m/s. If you're confused about this number, let me convert it: it's approximately 83 km/h. Imagine a 25 mm ice bullet hitting you head-on on the highway at this speed.

4. Test Temperature: This test is typically conducted at low temperatures because the material is more brittle at low temperatures.

5. Impact Point: The test is not conducted at a single point. The standard requires impacts at 11 different locations, including the center of the glass, edges, corners, and weak areas near the cell stringing wires (bus bars).

What is the falling ball impact test?

The drop ball impact test involves dropping a metal ball from a specified height onto the glass to see if it shatters. The test object is a single pane of glass. This test is relatively simple, accordingly to the GB 15763.2, this test requiring very simple elements:

1. Test object: Single pane of tempered glass

2. Metal ball: Weight: 1040g

3. Height: 1m
