People often think moisture problems begin after a solar project has been running for some time.
Sometimes that's true.
Sometimes the cause is already there before the first panel is even installed.
It isn't always obvious.
A lot of it comes down to how the glass is handled during those few hours on site.
Don't leave the glass uncovered for too long
Once the crate is opened, the glass is exposed to the jobsite.
Dust, humidity, light rain, morning dew...it all depends on the weather.
If installation isn't going to start straight away, it's usually better to keep the remaining glass protected instead of leaving every sheet open.
It saves cleaning later, and it keeps the sealing area in better condition.
Dry doesn't always mean dry
The glass surface may look completely clean.
That doesn't necessarily mean it's dry.
On humid mornings, a thin layer of moisture can form around the edges without being easy to notice.
Installers working outdoors see this quite often, especially when the temperature changes quickly.
Waiting a little while is usually the easier option.
Keep the sealing area simple
Before the glass goes into position, there is no need for complicated preparation.
Just make sure the contact area is clean.
No loose dust.
No packing fibers.
No pieces of old sealant if the glass is being replaced.
Small things, but they make sealing much easier.
Avoid unnecessary handling
Every time the glass is moved, leaned against another surface or repositioned, there is another chance for dust or moisture to reach the edges.
If the installation plan is already clear, moving the glass only once is usually the better approach.
Less handling often means fewer surprises.
Take another look before sealing
Many experienced installers have the same habit.
Right before applying the sealant, they check the corners one more time.
Not because they expect a problem.
Simply because corners are easy to miss when everyone is trying to finish the job.
Moisture usually takes its time
If water gets into the system, it rarely shows up the next day.
It may take weeks.
Sometimes months.
That is why installation details are easy to underestimate.
When the issue finally appears, nobody is thinking about what happened on installation day anymore.
The glass normally isn't the problem
After enough projects, one thing becomes fairly clear.
Most 3.2mm patterned solar glass performs exactly as it should.
When moisture is found later, the cause is often somewhere around the installation rather than the glass itself.
A clean edge, a dry sealing surface and a bit of patience before closing everything up don't sound like major steps.
But they're often the ones that make the difference.
