Why Does Greenhouse Have Enough Light but Poor Crop Growth?
Many greenhouse growers assume that sufficient sunlight automatically means healthy crop growth. However, having enough light is not the same as using light efficiently. Light intensity, distribution, penetration and heat load all influence photosynthesis and crop development. Therefore, when crops grow slowly, unevenly or produce inconsistent yields despite sufficient sunlight, the glazing system should also be considered.
1. More Light Does Not Always Mean Better Growth
In a greenhouse covered with conventional clear glass, sunlight enters mainly as direct light. The upper leaves of the crop canopy may receive strong radiation, while the middle and lower leaves receive significantly less.
This creates an uneven light environment:
- Upper leaves: May receive excessive light and heat.
- Middle canopy: Receives moderate light but may have limited penetration.
- Lower leaves: May remain underexposed and contribute less to photosynthesis.
As a result, the greenhouse may have high overall light transmission, but the crop cannot fully utilize the available light. Under strong sunlight, excessive radiation can also increase leaf temperature and cooling demand.
Therefore, greenhouse performance should not be evaluated by light transmission alone.
2. Float Glass: Maximum Direct Light Transmission
Clear float glass is widely used in greenhouse construction because of its high transparency and efficient transmission of natural sunlight.
It can be particularly suitable for high-light crops, including tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers, especially in regions with lower solar radiation or during seasons when maximizing available sunlight is important.
However, its direct-light characteristics can also create challenges in high-radiation environments. Strong sunlight may concentrate on the upper canopy, while the lower canopy remains comparatively shaded. For crops with dense foliage, this can result in uneven plant development and inefficient light distribution.
3. Patterned Glass: Improving Light Distribution
Patterned glass has a textured surface that can scatter incoming sunlight. Instead of allowing most sunlight to travel directly onto a limited area, the textured surface helps distribute light more evenly throughout the greenhouse.
This characteristic can be valuable for dense-canopy crops such as tomatoes and cucumbers, where lower and inner leaves need sufficient light. It can also benefit strawberries and leafy vegetables, where uniform light distribution can contribute to more balanced crop development.
The key advantage is not simply increasing the amount of light entering the greenhouse, but improving where the available light goes.
4. Choose Glass According to the Crop
There is no single greenhouse glass solution suitable for every crop.
- Tomatoes and cucumbers develop dense canopies and can benefit from more balanced light distribution. Patterned or diffusing glass can therefore be considered where direct sunlight creates strong light gradients.
- Peppers require sufficient light for flowering and fruit development. In regions with limited sunlight, high-transmission float glass can be advantageous, while in high-radiation climates, light distribution and heat management become more important.
- Strawberries and leafy vegetables generally benefit from a more uniform light environment. Excessive direct radiation may not always provide additional value, making suitable patterned or diffused glass an option worth evaluating.
5. The Right Question Is Not "How Much Light?"
When selecting greenhouse glass, growers should consider more than visible transparency. Light transmission, light diffusion, crop canopy structure, climate and seasonal solar radiation should be evaluated together.
A greenhouse with high light transmission can still deliver poor crop performance if the light is concentrated in the wrong place or accompanied by excessive heat.
The objective of greenhouse glazing is not simply to bring more light inside. It is to deliver the right quality, intensity and distribution of light to the crop. Choosing between float glass and patterned glass should therefore begin with the crop, climate and growing strategy-not simply the highest transmission value.
