High Light Transmission Is Not Always Better In Greenhouse
Light is essential for photosynthesis, but greenhouse performance depends not only on how much light enters, but also on how that light is distributed and used by the crop. Simply choosing glass with the highest light transmission may not always deliver the best growing environment.
1. High Transmission Can Mean More Direct Radiation
Clear float glass is widely used in greenhouses because of its high transparency and efficient transmission of natural sunlight. It can be an excellent choice for regions with limited solar radiation or for crops that require high light levels.
However, under strong sunlight, high transmission also means more direct radiation enters the greenhouse. Excessive direct light can increase leaf temperature, create strong light gradients and increase the cooling load.
For crops with dense canopies, the upper leaves may receive sufficient or even excessive light, while the lower leaves remain shaded. Therefore, high total light transmission does not necessarily mean that every part of the crop receives sufficient usable light.
2. Light Distribution Matters
Diffused glass provides a different approach. Its textured surface can scatter incoming sunlight and distribute it more evenly throughout the greenhouse.
This can help light penetrate deeper into the crop canopy, allowing more light to reach middle and lower leaves. For tomatoes, cucumbers and other dense-canopy crops, more uniform light distribution can support balanced plant development.
For strawberries and leafy vegetables, where excessive direct radiation may create heat or light stress under certain conditions, suitable diffusing glass can also provide a more balanced growing environment.
3. Which Is Better: Float Glass or Patterned Glass?
There is no universal answer.

Greenhouse glass should be selected according to crop requirements, local solar radiation, greenhouse orientation, canopy structure and climate-control capacity.
The objective is not to maximize light transmission at any cost. It is to create an optical environment where plants can efficiently use available light while maintaining an appropriate temperature.
